IMS Releases ePortfolio v1.0 Public Draft Specfication
BURLINGTON, Mass. - 12, October 2004 IMS Global Learning Consortium (IMS) today announces the release of the ePortfolio public draft specification and invites input from prospective users.
The IMS ePortfolio specification was created to make ePortfolios interoperable across different systems and institutions. The ePortfolio specification:
- Supports the advancement of lifelong learning important to many government initiatives.
- Makes exchanging portfolios from school to work transitions easier.
- Allows educators and institutions to better track competencies.
- Enhances the learning experience and improves employee development.
Project team co-leader Darren Cambridge says that "ePortfolios can become a powerful tool for tracking, planning, and sharing what one knows and can do throughout ones life. To realize this potential, portfolios must be truly portable. Widespread adoption of the ePortfolio specification will ensure this portability."
The Public Draft of the ePortfolio specification is a set of four documents - both technical and narrative in nature. The full document set: ePortfolio Information Model, ePortfolio Best Practices and Implementation Guide, ePotfolio Binding and IMS Rubric, is available for public review and comment. Those interested in providing feedback or suggestions may comment on any or all of the documents, which are available, at no charge from http://www.imsglobal.org/ep/index.html in a fully accessible HTML version and in a downloadable PDF version.
Public comment on the documents will be accepted for one month - from 12 October 2004 through 12 November 2004. Following the public comment phase, the project team will incorporate revisions and submit the document set to the IMS Technical Advisory Board for a vote.
ePortfolio was developed by technical experts and IMS members from the following organizations: EDUCAUSE (US), JISC (UK), Blackboard (US), UC-Berkeley (US), FDLearning(UK), Thomson Learning (US), Texas Instruments (US), Committee on Institutional Cooperation (US), and Industry Canada (CAN).
