APIP Friends-

There are a whole bunch of great APIP (Accessible Portable Item Profile) resources posted on the State of Minnesota web site here:

http://education.state.mn.us/M...esting/APIP/index.html

As I said at the December 7 workshop on APIP in Washington DC: I've been involved in educational/learning technology standards activities for 15 years and I have never seen such a golden opportunity for government via the Race to the Top Assessment projects to leverage such a great fit from largely existing and proven standards. The APIP profile leverages IMS QTI, IMS Access for All, and IMS Common Cartridge - of which there has been literally tens of millions of dollars of investment. In addition, support of QTI-based outcomes via LTI and LIS will enable APIP to be leveraged in a "black box" application-to-application interoperability (as opposed to having to exchange assessment content).

In addition, since the U.S. government has generally been a laggard in terms of supporting interoperability standards, getting involved in APIP is a great way to "give back" to the international community that has supported the IMS work that has lead to APIP. The combination of assessment, accessibility, and packaging that allows assessment systems and items to be incorporated throughout formative and summative activities is a bona fide next step that the U.S. can take the lead on.
